Types of Magnet Wire

Magnet wire or coiled wire is an insulated copper or aluminum electrical conductor used in motors, transformers, and other electromagnetic equipment. When wound on a coil and energized, it creates an electromagnetic field. There are many types, some of them are detailed below:

PIW Polyimide
• Applications are hermetic and sealed units, high temperature continuous duty relays and coils.
• Glazed with a polyimide resin that has the highest heat resistance of any organic polymer made by reaction of aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and aromatic diamine. It is very reliable in performance because it has excellent breaking characteristic, overload characteristic, and thermal shock resistance.
• Thermal class: 220oCC.
• The best of all enameled cables in resistance to overloads.
• Exceptional cutting characteristics and resistance to thermal shock.
• Exceptional resistance to chemical solvents.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.18mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.18mm to 3.20mm.

PEWN Polyester Nylon 155oC
• Applications are general purpose motors, portable generators, dry type transformers, electromagnetic solenoid coils, and household motors.
• Enameled with a polyester resin from the terephthalic acid group, PEWN is used as a general purpose magnetic wire for many applications.
• Thermal class: 155oC.
• PEWN has greatly improved in terms of surface smoothness and can therefore be wound with automatic winding machinery.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.20mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.20mm to 1.65mm.

HPEWN Polyester Nylon 180oC
• Applications are general purpose motors, portable generators, dry-type transformers, and electronics where weldability is not desired.
• It is an insulation film with a modified polyester base layer and a nylon top layer. It has become the standard for non-hermetic fractional horsepower motors.
• Thermal class: 180oC.
• Excellent cutting temperature.
• Excellent resistance to burning.
• Good thermal resistance.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.18mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.18mm to 2.30mm.

FORMVAR Polyvinyl formal
• Applications are oil filled transformers, motors, random wound coils, and solenoids.
• Enameled with formal polyvinyl resin, this wire stands out for its mechanical, electrical and chemical properties. It can be wound with automatic winding machinery and has a wide range of applications as a Class A general purpose wire.
• Thermal class: 105oC.
• Excellent winding capacity.
• Excellent resistance to hydrolysis and therefore usable in hermetic systems.
• Excellent resistance to abrasion and chemicals.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.60mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.60mm to 3.20mm.

UEWN Polyurethane Nylon
• Applications are small motors, electronic relays, and encapsulated coils.
• It is a polyurethane-based insulating enamel that allows conductors to be welded without previously removing the film from the cable. UEWN is a combination of polyurethane / polyamide insulation. Nylon improves winding capacity and its use in more severe winding operations.
• Thermal class: 130oC / 155oC.
• Weldable without removing the coating.
• Polyurethane Nylon (UEWN) has greatly improved in terms of surface smoothness and can therefore be wound with automatic winding machinery under harsh conditions.
• Excellent resistance to the most common solvents.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.04 mm to 1.65 mm.
• Class 1 size range (heavy construction): 0.04 mm to 2.60 mm.

HPEAIW Polyamide-imide polyester
• Applications are heat-resistant motors for refrigeration, general heat-resistant motors and generators, dry-type transformers, oil-immersed transformers, and electrical apparatus for use in hermetic and high-humidity locations.
• Thermal class: 200oC.
• Greater resistance to abrasion with internal lubricating film.
• Excellent dielectric properties.
• Resistance to cracking with common solvents and refrigerants.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.05 mm to 1.65 mm.
• Class 1 size range (heavy construction): 0.05 mm to 3.20 mm.

AIW Polyamide-imide
• Applications are refrigeration motors, power tool motors, heat-resistant motors, dry-type transformers, and oil-immersed transformers.
• Enameled with a polyamide-imide resin, AIW has extremely well balanced properties as a heat resistant magnet wire. It is the highest of all enameled wires in film strength and excels in resistance to surges and hydrolysis.
• Its use is especially recommended in devices in which it is subjected to rigorous rolling and in hermetic devices used at high temperatures.
• Thermal class: 220oC.
• Excellent winding capacity.
• Together with PIW in resistance to overloads.
• Excellent resistance to abrasion with internal lubricating film.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.18mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.18mm to 3.20mm.

EIAIW Polyester-imide Polyamide-imide
• Applications are heat-resistant motors for refrigeration, general heat-resistant motors and generators, dry-type transformers, oil-immersed transformers, and electrical apparatus for use in hermetic and high-humidity locations.
• It is an enameled wire for heat and refrigerant resistant applications, with a double coating composed of a lower layer of polyester-imide resin with high heat resistance and a layer of polyamide-imide that has a high resistance to refrigerants and capacity. of winding.
• Thermal class: 200oC
• Excellent wind capacity.
• Resistant to cracking caused by solvents.
• High resistance to freon refrigerants.
• Class 2 size range (single construction): 0.20mm to 1.65mm.
• Class 1 (heavy construction) size range: 0.20mm to 3.20mm.
